Abstract

Thermal spray technologies are an ensemble of industrially proven processes with an annual worldwide turnover of over $9bn. Ever since its humble beginnings a century ago, its evolution has given rise to novel approaches, materials and opened a vast field of applications.

To illustrate the pace, three new processes were invented in the last decade and the conservative sectors such as aerospace or biology use the processes routinely now.
In the talk, we will cover the basic work principles, present some of the techniques, discuss the respective advantages and drawbacks and, in the end, we will take a deeper look at cold kinetic spraying, a newborn in the family.

Bioscketch

After graduating from Czech Technical University in Prague, Czech Republic, Jan joined Nanyang Technological University in Singapore in 2004, where he obtained his PhD in surface modification of biocomponents.
After 8 years in Asia, he returned to the Czech Republic, to join the Brno University of Technology first and, in 2017, the Institute of Plasma Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences (Prague).
During his career Jan published 90 scientific papers. He is an active member of several international societies and committees for major conferences and serves as a guest editor and a reviewer for over 40 journals. He is active in teaching and supervising students at three universities.

His research interests are thermal spray technologies, in particular cold spray, plasma spray (DC, WSP-H, RF-ICP, incl. suspension spraying), biomaterials, high-entropy alloys, and plasma-facing materials.
He is an avid mountain, jungle and desert hiker and backpack-traveler, enthusiastic sportsman and sports supporter, motorbike rider (rally to Dakar in 2013), scuba diver, mountain climber, amateur theater actor, and photographer.
