Abstract: Complex engineering applications often require accurate mathematical models that are difficult to obtain based on simple physical laws. Dynamical system identification allows to retrieve a suitable description of a real world system using only experimental observations of the input and output variables. Specifically, the focus of this course will be on the Prediction Error Minimization (PEM) method, which is at the core of industrial signal processing and data analysis.

BIOSKETCHES:

Giulio Panzani was born in Monza (Italy), in 1984. He received the Bachelor and Master of Science cum laude in Mechanical Engineering from the Politecnico di Milano in September 2005 and April 2008, respectively.  In 2012 he earned the Ph.D. in Information engineering (system control specialization) from Politecnico di Milano. He held post-doc positions at the University of Trento and at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology of Zuerich (ETHZ). Since April 2015, he is assistant professor at Politecnico di Milano. His main research interests include the analysis of dynamics, control design and estimation for two (and four) wheeled vehicles and internal combustion engine control.

Simone Formentin was born in Legnano, Italy, in 1984. He received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees cum laude in automation engineering from Politecnico di Milano, Italy, respectively in 2006 and 2008, and the Ph.D. degree cum laude in information technology within a joint program between Politecnico di Milano and Johannes Kepler University Linz, Austria, in 2012. He held postdoctoral appointments at EPFL Lausanne, Switzerland, and University of Bergamo, Italy. Since 2014, he has been an assistant professor with Politecnico di Milano. His research interests include system identification, machine learning and data-driven control design, with a focus on automotive applications. Dr. Formentin is a member of the IEEE CSS TC on System Identification and Adaptive Control, the IFAC TC on Modelling, Identification and Signal Processing and the IFAC TC on Robust Control. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the IEEE CSS.
