Abstract:
Nowadays machine learning techniques are increasingly employed to perform detection tasks where the goal is to filter out unwanted or illicit patterns. Computer security offers different examples of these types of tasks, such as, spam filtering, malware detection, phishing detection, biometric authentication, etc.
In order to evade detection, attackers try to attack the learning algorithm first, either by poisoning the training data, or by crafting the malicious patterns so that they classified as benign patterns. In this talk I will present the activities carried out at the PRA Lab of the University of Cagliari where we proposed a methodological approach to the security evaluation of pattern classifiers, we tested the approach on different application scenarios, and we provided some suggestions to the development of robust pattern classifiers.

About the Speaker:
Prof. Giorgio Giacinto is Associate Professor of Computer Engineering at the University of Cagliari, Italy. He obtained the MS degree in Electrical Engineering in 1994, and the Ph.D. degree in Computer Engineering in 1999. Since 1995 he joined the research group on Pattern Recognition and Applications of the DIEE, University of Cagliari, Italy. His research interests are in the area of pattern recognition and its application to computer security, and image classification and retrieval. During his career Giorgio Giacinto has published more than one hundred papers on international journals, conferences, and books. He is a senior member of the ACM and the IEEE. He has been involved in the scientific coordination of several research projects at the local, national and international level. Currently, he is coordinating two projects funded by the regional government of Sardinia, and he is involved in the scientific coordination of three EU FP7 Projects in the fields of computer security, and image classification. Since 2012 he is the director of the Summer School on Computer Security and Privacy “Building Trust in the Information Age” (http://comsec.diee.unica.it/summer- school).
