Herman Weyl characterized topology as “what you can say when you know almost nothing”.  This statement may sound trite, but it poses profound challenges when our speech is constrained by a need for mathematical precision. In this talk, I will show how topology and electrical engineering have had a symbiotic relationship throughout their evolution, from Gauss’s early explorations in topology, Kirchhoff’s development of circuit theory and Maxwell’s development of electromagnetic theory, to data structures and algorithms which automate modern engineering analysis. The talk will conclude with comments on why the successes of topological methods in electrical engineering are hard to replicate in other engineering fields.
