An introduction to blockchains

Abstract:

Blockchains have recently emerged as a means to exchange currency securely in a purely electronic and decentralized way. Blockchain-based technologies attracted a lot of attention worldwide. Modern applications of blockchains also go beyond cryptocurrency exchanges, including, e.g., time-stamping documents, delivery tracking, and “smart contracts”. In this seminar we provide a basic introduction to blockchains, describing the key aspects of Bitcoin and Ethereum, the two most used blockchains. We also comment on their main applications and open issues.
