Abstract:
Most of the matter in our Universe is invisible to us. Yet this "dark" matter plays an essential role in shaping galaxies and large-scale-structures. In this colloquium, I will review currents attempts to detect it (directly or indirectly) and explain how observations of the matter distribution in our Universe could lead to new extensions of the standard model of particle physics.
