# The Inverse Mean Curvature Flow: from Geometric Analysis to General Relativity

**Abstract**:

A famous conjecture of Penrose in General Relativity roughly states that we can control the mass of a spacetime in terms of the total area of its black holes. In this talk we outline the wonderful proof of an important special case of this conjecture through Inverse Mean Curvature Flow due to Huisken and Ilmanen. The argument is geometrically very intuitive, yet the rigorous realisation is a journey through various challenging problems in Analysis.
