Abstract:
Groups acting on regular rooted trees provide an answer to many problems in group theory. One of these is the General Burnside Problem, posed by William Burnside in 1902, which asks if a finitely generated group in which all elements have finite order is finite. Counterexamples to this problem are the Gupta-Sidki p-groups, introduced by Gupta and Sidki in 1983, which are groups acting on p-adic rooted trees. In this talk we will give an introduction to the theory of the groups of automorphisms of regular rooted trees, providing examples and interesting properties of these groups.
