Abstract

Despite the critical role of regulations on competition and innovation, little is known about firm responses and effects of performance under different regulatory contingencies.
This study complements past literature by exploring the interplay between this specific type of environmental change, firm technological innovation, and performance.
By longitudinally investigating Le Mans Prototype racing teams’ technological strategies and their performance outcomes, we suggest that regulatory contingencies varying in magnitude (radical vs. incremental) and direction (permissive vs. restrictive) differently affect the value of different innovation strategies for performance.
We advance a set of theoretical proposition with key implications for theory and practice.
