European economic governance after Brexit: past experiences, present challenges and future opportunities

Abstract:
At the heart of the challenges that the EU is facing lie questions such as, what do we collectively want the EU to do? What government structures and policies do we need to support these ambitions? Which of the policies and competences (powers) could and perhaps should be best developed and expanded at the EU level? Which are better dealt with at a lower level of government? How can we ensure that good governance principles such as democracy, effectiveness and efficiency are adhered to? This lecture offers some thoughts as to why I think there is a sense of urgency around the need for the EU to seize the moment, so as to develop further the EU institutional architecture sooner rather than later and what challenges we are currently facing in seeking to do so.

Dr Amy Verdun is Professor in European Politics and Political Economy. She joined the Leiden University in July 2018. Before joining she was during 21 years in the Department of Political Science of the University of Victoria (UVic), BC Canada where she was Full Professor since 2005.
At UVic she served as Founder and Director of the European Studies Program (1997-2005); Graduate Advisor (2007-2009); and as Chair (Head) of the Department (2010-2013). Her research deals with European integration, governance and policy-making, political economy, as well as comparisons between the EU and Canada. She was the recipient of the 2009 Craigdarroch Silver Medal for Excellence in Research of the University of Victoria and in 2017 the prestigious Lansdowne Distinguished Fellow award and the European Community Studies-Association Canada teaching award, 2018.
From 2010-2017 she was co-editor (with Michelle Cini) of the JCMS: Journal of Common Market Studies. To date has published 20 books, more than 120 peer-reviewed articles and chapters. Her most recent book is a co-edited student textbook (with Achim Hurrelmann and Emmanuel Brunet-Jailly): European Union Governance and Policy Making: A Canadian Perspective (University of Toronto Press, March 2018).
