Changing Frontiers in and around Arkadia: the Work of the Arkadian Federation in the 360s
The Arkadian confederacy was created in 370, and in 363 split into two groups, at least one of which continued to act as a confederacy until the battle of Mantinea in 362. During the brief existence of the confederacy questions about frontiers took two main forms. One was the foundation of Megalopolis, which concerned mainly frontiers within Arkadia. The other was membership of the confederacy, and so the federal frontier with other regions: membership, clearly based on Arkadian ethnic identity, was extended to include Triphylia but not other regions that came under Arkadian control during the war with Elis. Myth was used, and even adapted, to strengthen links with Triphylia but also with other non-Arkadian communities.
