The most widely accepted functions of social work supervision as expounded by Kadushin (1976) are intrinsically based on Perlman’s (1957) traditional problem-oriented paradigm. However, problem-solving supervision may undermine strengths-based social work practices, considering the parallels that exist between the processes of supervision and social work practice. Strengths-based supervision may find common ground in diverse contexts. Based on a range of contemporary qualitative research findings in South Africa, a comprehensive synthesised and authentic definition of social work supervision is compiled and unpacked with distinct determinants and within a strengths-based practice. Some implication on emotions in social work and some challenges for the rethinking of social work supervision practices across the world are posed.
