The Security-Development Nexus: the cases of Colombia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo
Abstract
The lecture aims at providing an overview of the interdependent relationship between security and development, with a particular focus on the emergence of private military companies in extractivist economies in Colombia and DRC. Some of the issues to be discussed are the role of private military companies in providing security to transnational corporations operating in areas of limited statehood, as well as their environmental and human rights implications.

Antoine Perret is the Manager of the Civil Society Organizations Department at the International Code of Conduct Association in Geneva, Switzerland. He holds a PhD in law and LLM from the European University Institute (Florence, Italy); a Master in International Affairs from Universidad Externado de Colombia (Bogota, Colombia) – in collaboration with Columbia University and Science Po, Paris; and a License in International Relations from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, Switzerland. He has published several books and articles on private security regulation and has collaborated with UN agencies on human rights and security issues.
