A Diplomat’s Thoughts on Today’s Global Affairs
Invited Speaker
- Ambassador Marco Marsilli - Regent of Fondazione Campana dei Caduti
The evident weakening of the “classic” multipolar system, conceived and implemented after 1945 by the victorious nations of World War II – and most clearly exemplified by the current “inaction” of its central pillar, the United Nations – calls for the creation of a new international order. This order must establish mutual security frameworks and shared rules to avoid paralysis or outright confrontation in relations between states and governments? Amid two major wars with unpredictable outcomes and durations, what impact might the election of a new US president, advocating an “America First” agenda, have on global stability? How might the growing prominence of the BRICS as an alternative forum for international cooperation, alongside Europe’s apparent and ongoing inability to assert itself as a comprehensive global actor – beyond its role as an economic power – reshape a multidimensional landscape that cannot exclude foreign security, and defence policy?
Amid a scenario dominated by challenges, there are nonetheless some glimmers of hope.
