"Challenges for Europe's future: Economy, Defence, Migration"
Ambassador Ferdinando Nelli Feroci, President Istituto Affari Internazionali
After political elections in France, Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic, the political landscape in Europe is characterized by mixed signals. And support for the EU by governments, political parties and public opinions remains weak.
Three main subjects appear nevertheless to be among the highest priorities of the european agenda: economy (with the completion of the banking union, and the further reform of the governance of the Euro); security and defense (with the objective of enhancing european capabilities in the field of defense); and migrations (with the objective of defining common policies for the management of migratory flows). Several ideas and proposals are already circulating on these subjects.
An acceleration of the process will most likely take place following the formation of the new Government in Germany.
But member States are still divided on how to move ahead.
In the absence of an agreement by all member States, differentiated integration remains a valid and practicable option.
