How is Euroscepticism, populism, and anti-migrant politics influencing and re-shaping the EU institutions and the EU-level Civil Society?
Bringing together scholars and practitioners who work at European level, this workshop assesses the impact of the recent rise of populist forces on the European Union, its institutions, and the European civil society.  Populism is understood in broader terms as a political programme that challenges some of the key values of the EU, such as reliance on civil society associations in the protection of human rights, an anti-discrimination ethos, support for migrants’ integration, and a positive view of European integration.
The seminar collects a variety of critical standpoints on different levels of the EU structure and functioning. It is structured in three main panels, focused respectively on the European Parliament, the European Commission, and European Civil Society. The seminar offers a chance to reflect on how different institutional actors and civil society organisations interact and contribute to the narrative on the impact of populism on the EU.
Contributors from the European institutions will interact with scholars, offering student and the general audience an interesting mix of theoretical and practical perspectives. Documenting and analysing the impact of populism on the EU is part of the all-important aim of enhancing our understanding of political affairs and bridging academic and professional perspectives on the current status of the European project.
