Si dice che non ci sia futuro senza comunità. Questo è ancor più vero per le nuove generazioni, destinate ad affrontare problemi sociali mai sperimentati prima. Nuove challenges e nuovi percorsi formativi preparano gli studenti e le studentesse alle sfide del futuro, con un’attenzione particolare alle opportunità professionali.
L’obiettivo delle challenges è quello di condividere esperienze di ricerca in un contesto sicuro e favorevole allo scambio di idee e opinioni. Le sfide hanno l’obiettivo di creare comunità capaci di affrontare problemi reali. Non c’è modo migliore di prepararsi al futuro che scommettere sulla formazione e sulla preparazione delle nuove generazioni.
Diamo un’occhiata alle challenges che coinvolgeranno studenti e studentesse UniTrento nei prossimi mesi.
Fa riferimento al Dipartimento di Ingegneria industriale la Management Engineering Challenge. Promossa in collaborazione con HIT, la challenge ha preso il via il 28 settembre e coinvolge studentesse e studenti magistrali. L’obiettivo è trovare una soluzione innovativa (e attuabile) ai problemi reali posti da alcune realtà della pubblica amministrazione e dell’imprenditoria. Di fatto, si tratta di migliorare i loro processi e servizi attraverso le metodiche dell'ingegneria gestionale. Il team vincitore verrà decretato il 6 dicembre.
Le challenges possono coinvolgere anche i dipartimenti umanistici, come dimostra la Hitchhikers’ guides, virtual Charons, and the future of cultural objects, promossa dal Consorzio europeo delle università innovative (ECIU) e organizzata dal Dipartimento di Sociologia e Ricerca sociale in collaborazione con la School of Innovation (SOI). Fino al 13 dicembre, studentesse e studenti rifletteranno sul rapporto dinamico che lega progresso tecnologico, cambiamenti sociali e la fruizione dei beni culturali. Le attività si svolgeranno a UniTrento e al Museo degli Usi e Costumi della Gente trentina.
C’è tempo fino al 23 novembre per iscriversi all’Italian Collegiate Programming Contest, una sfida di informatica a squadre in cui diversi team da tutta Italia si confronteranno nella risoluzione di esercizi di programmazione su algoritmi e strutture dati. La finale si svolgerà il 26 e un warmup round è previsto per il 19.
Da pochissimo, sono aperte anche le candidature per la UX Challenge 2023, l’iniziativa proposta da HIT – Hub Innovazione Trentino che stimola l’innovazione in campo digitale. La sfida tecnologica prevede che studenti e ricercatori dell’Università di Trento e Fondazione Bruno Kessler lavorino insieme per risolvere alcuni problemi di innovazione proposti da una rosa di imprese. La challenge si svolgerà da lunedì 27 febbraio a venerdì 3 marzo 2023. Per partecipare, studenti e imprese possono candidarsi sul sito di Fondazione HIT entro il 25 novembre 2022.
Fino al 2 febbraio 2023 ci si può iscrivere alla CyberChallenge.IT, la sfida degli hackerdefender. Il programma di addestramento, organizzato dal Laboratorio nazionale di Cybersecurity, è rivolto a studenti delle superiori e delle università dai 16 ai 24 anni con l’obiettivo di identificare e reclutare una nuova generazione di cyberdefender. Una prima fase di selezione dei partecipanti sarà effettuata tramite pre-test il 4 febbraio. La selezione ordinaria si svolgerà il 7. Le lezioni di addestramento, in programma fino a maggio, prepareranno alla competizione locale, fissata per il 31 maggio, e a quella nazionale tra il 28 e il 1° luglio 2023. Il referente per l’Università di Trento è il professor Bruno Crispo.
A febbraio si svolgerà anche Google HashCode, il concorso di programmazione in team proposto da Google a studenti e professionisti di tutto il mondo. Ogni partecipante dovrà scegliere una propria squadra e un proprio linguaggio di programmazione. Google proporrà poi a ogni team un problema ingegneristico reale da risolvere. Il concorso di quest’anno inizia con un turno di qualificazione online. Le squadre migliori saranno poi invitate ad affrontarsi nelle finali mondiali.
Sempre nell’ambito della programmazione, c’è poi la Reply Code Challenge. La competizione è organizzata dall’azienda italiana Reply, specializzata in tecnologia e consulenza. La sfida, in programma a marzo 2023, consisterà nel risolvere un problema di ingegneria con la propria squadra e con il linguaggio di programmazione preferito. Anche in questo caso, come per la Google HashCode l’obiettivo è quello di individuare nuovi talenti nel settore informatico.
Un po’ più in là, a luglio 2023, tornerà anche la IPSP, Industrial Problem Solving With Physics, attivata dal Dipartimento di Fisica con Confindustria Trento e Polo Meccatronica. Trenta fra studenti e studentesse, laureati e laureate, dottorandi e dottorande, assegnisti e assegniste di ricerca, ricercatori, ricercatrici e borsisti, borsiste lavoreranno in team con l’obiettivo di trovare soluzioni ai problemi tecnologici proposti da tre aziende.

The future needs community. This is all the more true when it comes to younger generations, that will have to face unprecedented social problems. New challenges and programmes of study prepare students for the future, with an emphasis on opportunities for professional growth.
Challenges create a favourable environment for students to share research experiences and exchange views and ideas. Their goal is to create communities capable of addressing real life problems. There is no better way to get ready for the future than to invest in education and training for future generations.
Here is an overview of the challenges awaiting UniTrento students in the coming months.
The Management Engineering Challenge has been oraganized by the Department of Industrial Engineering in collaboration with HIT, it started on 28 September and involves Masters’ students. The goal of the challenge is to find a practicable and innovative solution to real problems posed by partners from the public administration and the business world. In other words, students have to find a way to improve services and processes using management engineering methodologies. The winning team will be announced on 6 December.
Challenges can also be launched by humanities departments, as is the case with Hitchhikers’ guides, virtual Charons, and the future of cultural objects, designed by the European Consortium of Innovative Universities (ECIU) and organized by the Department of Sociology and Social Research in collaboration with the School of Innovation (SOI). Until 13 December, students will reflect on the dynamic relationship between technological progress, social changes and the utilization of cultural heritage. The activities will take place at UniTrento and at Museo degli Usi e Costumi della Gente trentina.
Until 23 November students can join the Italian Collegiate Programming Contest, an IT challenge in which teams from all over Italy compete to solve coding exercises using algorithms and data structures. The finals will take place on 26 November, while a warmup round has been organized for 19 November.
The UX Challenge 2023, organized by HIT–Hub Innovazione Trentino to stimulate digital innovation, has just been launched and is accepting applications. In this challenge, students and researchers from the University of Trento and Fondazione Bruno Kessler work together to solve a number of innovation problems presented by a group of companies. The challenge will take place from Monday, 27 February, to Friday, 3 March 2023. To participate, students and companies can submit their applications on the website of Fondazione HIT by 25 November 2022.
The CyberChallenge.IT, especially designed for cyber defenders, will accept registrations until 2 February 2023. The training programme, organized by the national laboratory of cybersecurity, is designed for high-school and university students aged 16 to 24, and aims to identify and recruit the next generation of cyber defenders. A pre selection test will take place on 4 February while the actual entry test will be on 7 February. The training classes, that will continue until May, will prepare the participants for the local stage of the competition, scheduled for 31 May, and for the national one, that will run from 28 June and 1 July 2023. The contact person for the University of Trento is professor Bruno Crispo.
Another coding contest scheduled for February is Google HashCode, organized by Google for teams of students and professionals from all over the world. Each participant will choose a team and a coding language. Google will then give every team a real engineering problem to solve. This year the contest will start with an online qualification round. The best teams will then be invited to compete against each other in the world finals.
Coding enthusiasts can also participate in the Reply Code Challenge organized by Reply, Italian IT consulting firm. The challenge, scheduled for March 2023, consists in solving an engineering problem in team and using a programming language of choice. In this case too, as with Google HashCode, the goal is to identify new talents for the IT sector.
IPSP, Industrial Problem Solving With Physics, created by the Department of Physics with Confindustria Trento and Polo Meccatronica, will be back some time later, in July 2023. Thirty students, graduates, PhD candidates and postdocs, researchers and research collaborators will work in teams to find solutions to technological problems proposed by companies.
