UNIRE addresses cultural issues related to violence against women within the framework of the implementation of the Council of Europe-Istanbul Convention. It focuses on key political and theoretical aspects that mark gender-based violence committed against women because they are women. The Istanbul Convention states that parties are obliged to address fully violence against women and domestic violence, understood as a violation of human rights. They must take the necessary policy measures to prevent and combat this form of violence through a holistic response that links physical, sexual, psychological, economic assaults with cultural representations and seeks prevention through educational and cultural intervention.

Graduate students (MA and PhD programs) are invited to submit proposals that focus on the cultural aspects that either favor or may counter gender violence and that describe actions and practices that honor the agreement signed with the Istanbul Convention. It aims  to include a most diverse graduate community and strongly encourages submissions also from underrepresented groups.

Please submit abstracts (250 words) with title and a short bio by December 13, 2018. Each presentation will be in English and have a time slot of 15 minutes.

In addition to proposals of academic papers, we invite the submission of art works by graduates (presented by a photo and a 250-words caption) to be displayed at the Conference. Artists will be given time for a brief description of their works.

Notification of acceptance to applicants: December 17, 2018.

The publication of conference proceedings will be considered. There is no registration fee for graduate participants. A limited number of travel grants may be available upon request, especially for participants with less access to funding and/or based in soft-currency countries.
