All the cohort of 8 EIT Manufacturing master’s degree students who came to Trento to complete their double degree path in "Data Science and AI for a competitive manufacturing" officially graduated.
Being enrolled in the EIT Manufacturing Master School, the students spent their first year in one of the European Universities partners - University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI); University College Dublin (UCD), Ireland; Ecole Centrale de Nantes (ECN), France - , then finishing the programme at the University of Trento within the Master’s Degree in Computer Science offered by the Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science.
Joe El Khoury, one of our graduates, wanted to share his experience and his stay in Trento:
How was you experience in the EITM program?
“My experience in the Data Science and AI for Competitive Manufacturing program at EITM (European Institute of Innovation and Technology in Manufacturing) has been transformative.
As a computer science student at UniTrento, I had the opportunity to dive into real-world applications of AI and data science in competitive manufacturing, which significantly broadened my technical skills. The program leveraged the extensive EITM ecosystem, connecting academic institutions, research centers, and industry partners across Europe. This network provided access to cutting-edge resources and expertise, enhancing the learning experience. The program included a summer school that provided a strong foundation in key concepts and tools.
Throughout the curriculum, I collaborated especially at UniTrento but also during the summer school and at ECN with companies working on projects that involved optimizing production processes and maintenance, as well as with companies interested in code migration and in optimizing carbon emissions. The interdisciplinary nature of the program allowed me to collaborate with engineers, business professionals, and fellow data scientists, creating a holistic learning environment. I appreciated the balance between theoretical knowledge and hands-on projects, especially in applying computer science skills and AI to solve real-world industrial problems. This exposure not only deepened my understanding of how AI can drive innovation in industry but also provided valuable insights into Industry 4.0 technologies and their practical implementation in manufacturing settings. The EITM ecosystem's emphasis on innovation and entrepreneurship further inspired me to think beyond technical solutions and consider their broader impact on the industry in general”.
How was your stay in Trento?
My stay in Trento has been an enriching experience, both academically and personally. The city offers a perfect balance between a vibrant student community and the tranquility of its beautiful surroundings. And let’s be honest, it’s Italy so naturally, everything looks like it belongs on a postcard! I appreciated the strong academic and industrial environment, which fostered collaboration and innovation, especially within the EITM program. The university's focus on technology and innovation provided an ideal backdrop for my studies in computer science, while the proximity to industrial partners enhanced the practical aspects of my learning. Outside of academics, Trento's historical charm, outdoor activities in the nearby Dolomites, and the welcoming local culture made it a great place to live and explore. The international student community, particularly within the program, made it easy to build connections and immerse myself in diverse cultures, broadening my global perspective.
The EITM network's presence in Trento also facilitated interactions with students and professionals from other European countries, further enriching my international experience. Overall, my time in Trento has been an unforgettable chapter in my academic and personal growth, equipping me with the skills, knowledge, and cultural awareness necessary to thrive in the global tech and manufacturing industries. The unique combination of academic rigor, industrial exposure, and cultural diversity has prepared me well for the challenges of the rapidly evolving field of AI and data science in manufacturing. Plus, the pasta and gelato didn’t hurt either!
The Data Science and AI for a competitive manufacturing offered at the Master's Degree in Computer Science is a combination of studying manufacturing science and Information and communication technology, including the usage and adoption of advanced digital solutions and platforms.
The programme offers mobility, mentorship, networking, innovation and entrepreneurship, including relevant training on how to transform ideas into businesses.
EIT Manufacturing Master’s graduates will be able to generate startups or innovation within manufacturing companies and ecosystems, contributing to European competitiveness, environmental sustainability and the creation of new jobs.
