It is no secret that the population of the world is ageing as never before in history, and it is very likely that there will not be a return to the young populations that our ancestors have known.

This phenomenon is witnessed by a multitude of studies available in literature, making evident the need to find a common vision on how to ensure a sustainable population ageing in the future from a social, ethical, and economic point of view.

Thanks to the know-how and competences acquired by researchers in the domain of assisted living and monitoring, the University of Trento has become a partner in the UNCAP consortium (Ubiquitous iNteroperable Care for Ageing People), funded under the Horizon 2020 framework programme and coordinated by Trilogis S.r.l. The project aims at solving this problem providing a scalable and open platform designed to help people live independently. The goals are not only to provide support to the elderly through assistive technologies, but also to contribute in improving their quality of life, enhancing home care treatment, increasing safety and fostering physical and cognitive abilities. This latter point is the object of research at the University of Trento, where our purpose is to deliver a platform for cognitive and physical rehabilitation implementing a set of so-called serious gamesSerious games exploit the paradigm of a game to achieve specific goals in recovering cognitive and physical functionalities that have been compromised as a consequence of trauma or ageing.

This platform, developed by the University of Trento (Media Lab at DISI and MIRo Lab at DII) for the cognitive part, and by the Medical Physics Laboratory of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki for the physical part, implements a number of games where the users are asked to perform simple tasks represented in the form of a game. This includes a set of hand dexterity plus cognitive-oriented games performed on a computer, a 3D puzzle game that also involves the manipulation of puzzle cubes, and a suite of full body rehabilitation games.

The advantage of the platform, compared to the more traditional implementation of the rehabilitation protocol, consists in the complete automation of the process, making it possible for the patients to conduct a personalized rehabilitation session in complete autonomy, with no pressure, and according to their personal schedules and timing.

The serious games platform will be made available as a component of UNCAP and will be tested in the pilot sites participating in the experiment (11 pilot sites located in 7 countries in Europe). Although only one year has passed since the kickoff meeting of the project, UNCAP is almost ready and will be available for testing starting June 2016.
