Research integrity: why it is important
The strategic project INTEGRA - Integrity of TrEnto ReseArch

by Elisabetta Pulice
Research fellow at the Faculty of Law of the University of Trento

Research integrity is closely connected to research quality and credibility. It determines the impact of research on society and on the university scientific community: it safeguards the foundations of the scientific method, inspires confidence in research itself and in its findings, protects the image of researchers and their career; it also aims to prevent possible negative impacts on the participants and, more in general, on society, avoiding the waste of resources and contributing to economic and social development.

The connection between high research quality standards and appropriate scientific conduct is a vital part of the University's institutional policy. The University of Trento has a Code of ethics and a Code of Conduct, research ethics and integrity are part of its priorities for strategic planning, and their principles are promoted specifically by the Research Ethics Committee (CER) and the Animal Welfare Committee (OPBA).
This is the context in which the INTEGRA project – Integrity of TrEnto ReseArch – was launched, funded within the Strategic Plan 2017-2021, and developed in collaboration with the Directorate of Research services and valorisation.

INTEGRA is a multidisciplinary interdepartmental project with a comparative and European dimension. Many research integrity issues, in fact, are common across different disciplinary areas, while others are specific to a subject or a type or research. When it comes to ethics and integrity, different subject areas, like biomolecular, food and environmental sciences, social and cognitive science, and information engineering – to mention some of the research areas at UniTrento – raise different questions and call for different actions, while research projects that involve genetic data or interviews with vulnerable subjects require specific protections.

At the same time, however, discussion and experience sharing among researchers help raise awareness on the issues, the challenges, the uncertainties, the pressures and the advantages of research integrity. And to raise awareness and disseminate knowledge on principles of ethics and integrity and ensure that they enable, rather than hamper, scientific autonomy and freedom, you need coordinated actions and strategies among departments, researchers and University services.

Research integrity tools and principles vary among the different legal and academic systems. Compliance with ethical principles and relevant national, EU and international legislation, and with the standards of the European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity (ALLEA) is fundamental for the ethical assessment of research projects funded within the EU framework programme for research and innovation. Ensuring an appropriate level of research integrity and relevant information is even more important now that research at UniTrento is becoming increasingly international.

INTEGRA comprises three lines of action: education, research and institutional collaboration. The study of the ethical, legal and professional aspects of research integrity from a national, EU and comparative law perspective, is paired with an analysis of the real needs, instruments and procedures of the University. Thanks to this work the University has been able to design, in collaboration with the Research ethics and integrity office of the Directorate of Research services and valorisation, training courses and events that aim to create knowledge and raise awareness on research integrity issues; facilitate discussion among the University's doctoral students, researchers and teachers; provide training for PhD students and research staff on how to draft and submit projects that must be approved by the Research Ethics Committee.

Training events on how to submit projects to the Research Ethics Committee, and workshops with experts of different disciplines, have been scheduled for the first semester of the academic year 2021-2022 for students, PhD candidates and researchers. Training courses, organized for the various research areas and also through interdepartmental activities, will examine theoretical aspects and include focus groups on specific topics.

Learning materials will be provided and regularly updated – both in Italian and in English – on the project's website and will cover a wide range of topics: research integrity principles and tools at UniTrento, at national level, and in EU-funded projects; the procedure and issues on the submission of research projects to the Research Ethics Committee; research ethics and integrity issues; meetings with experts from different disciplinary areas.
