The Italian national team of long track ice speed skating at the University World Championship in Kazakhstan obtained seven medals: again one of the world’s top teams.

Almaty will host the 2017 Winter Universiade. About 100 athletes of 12 nations participated in this championship.

The finance police officer from Venice, Giacomo Mirko Nenzi, who is attending the TOPSport  programme of UniTrento, won 4 medals: 2 gold for 500 and 1,000 m and two bronze for 1,500 and mass-start.

Nenzi was third after the Polish Jan Szymanski and the Russian Alexander Zhigin, in the opening day of the competitions, in the 1,500 m race, while the two athletes from Pergine, Michele Malfatti and Alessio Trentini obtained a 9th and 14th final position.

The same team (Nenzi, Malfatti, and Trentini) conquered the silver medal in the team pursuit, before Norway and after Poland.

During the second day of competition at the “Medeu Alpine Ice Arena” in Almaty, Nenzi won the gold medal for the 1,000 m, with a new track record.

Matteo Malfatti (Sporting Club Pergine) won the silver medal in the 5,000 m competition, thus gaining the fourth Italian medal.

The team obtained three further medals during the final competition day: Nenzi obtained his second gold medal on the 500 m, thus proving that he is faster and more competitive on the shorter distances. Alessio Trentini (Velocisti Ghiaccio Pergine) won the silver medal in the mass-start race, followed by Nenzi who won his second bronze medal.
