Sandro Stringari, professor emeritus of the Physics Department of our University, has recently become a member of the Accademia dei Lincei

The appointment ceremony took place in November on the occasion of the inauguration of the Academic Year of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei in Rome.

Professor Stringari received the certificate of appointment from Professor Giorgio Parisi, 2021 Nobel Prize for Physics and President of the Class of Physical, Mathematical and Natural Sciences of the Accademia.

The Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, the highest Italian cultural institution, is the oldest scientific academy in the world, and its scope is to promote, coordinate, integrate and spread scientific knowledge in its highest expression, in the unity and universality of culture.

He had teaching assignments and conducted research at prestigious institutions, such as the University of Oxford, the Institut de Physique Nucléaire of Orsay, the Ecole Normale Supérieure of Paris and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In the academic year 2004/2005 he held the European Chair at Collège de France in Paris.

In 2002 he founded the Bose-Einstein Condensation Research Centre (BEC) at the Department of Physics of the University of Trento, which has recently been renamed after Russian physicist Lev Pitaevskii. The BEC Center is focused on research on quantum gases and welcomes researchers from all over the world.

In 2011, Professor Stringari was awarded a European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant for the project "Quantum Gases Beyond Equilibrium". In the same year he was appointed correspondent partner of the Accademia dei Lincei.

He conducted research in nuclear physics, quantum fluid physics and atomic physics, organised a large number of conferences and schools of physics, including three courses of the prestigious "Enrico Fermi" School of the Italian Physical Society, in 1998, 2008 and 2022.
