Louis II, often called 'of Italy', reigned the kingdom of Italy and adjacent regions first as king and then as emperor from 840 to 875, over 35 years. Arguably, he was the most 'Italian' of all Carolingian rulers. In my talk, I will first introduce him and his career and will then show him at important stages in his life and in Italian history: quarrelling with the pope, marrying his wife or disciplining rebellious counts. It may also show in due course, that, while he was probably loved by his supporters and entourage, his rule was very likely not seen ambiguously as good or just.
