QROWD project among the finalists of the Best Success Story Awards 2020

Smart solutions to improve urban mobility

Versione stampabile

European cities face daily problems with the mobility of their inhabitants and visitors, as well as with the delivery of goods and services along their connecting roads.

This was the research topic of the QROWD project, financed by Horizon 2020, that has been selected among the finalists for the Best Success Story Award 2020 of the Big Data Value Association (BDVA), an event to be held on November 5, 2020.

This is a significant achievement for this story of research that involved 8 international partners including the Municipality of Trento and the University of Trento with the scientific supervision of Fausto Giunchiglia, professor at the Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science.

“We are very proud of this result” comments prof. Giunchiglia” This research has shown once more - should it be needed - that a technological innovation motivated and driven by social innovation is possible, by making a change whose goal is to create a better and more inclusive society where living is easier and more pleasant".

QROWD offers local government and transportation companies innovative solutions to reduce congestion, make mobility safer and more efficient, and improve the use of urban infrastructures by monitoring travel times.

The city of Trento was chosen as “pilot city” of the project in order to find innovative solutions to improve urban transport and mobility. Combining Machine Learning and artificial intelligence on Big data analysis, the project led to three important results:

  • the calculation of “Modal split”: to understand the travel habits of citizens and commuters
  • the collection of data relating to yellow-striped parking lots and bicycle racks
  • the creation of a dashboard, where mobility data can be displayed on a map
